The deadline for applying to be a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland isn't for 2 weeks, but those in the 2nd Congressional District must declare by Thursday, March 29th.

The original deadline was today, but outrage caused that to be amended.

What's the deal with the deadline?

Some feared the worst, given Arlan Meekhof and Bill Huizenga's involvement... Evidently, the 2nd uses ballot machines no other place uses, and the printer requires certain accommodations.

2nd District Chair Mike Hewitt originally posted:

"Attention State Caucus/Convention Delegates seeking to be elected national delegate ...

Because of the time needed for ballot printing, etc., time is of the essence. If you're a state delegate and wish to have your name placed on the ballot for national convention delegate please see the following excerpt.

The deadline to have your name printed on the ballot for 2nd District will be 5 p.m. on Friday, March 25, 2016 and the deadline to remove your name from the ballot is 3 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2016. The email address to do this is mi2candidates@gmail.com. There will be room on the ballot for write in candidates nominated from the floor. No candidate may have his or her name on the ballot as supporting more than one presidential candidate. All candidates whether printed on the ballot or nominated from the floor must have filed a presidential preference form for one of the three allocated candidates with the Michigan Republican Party by 6:00 pm on Friday, April 8.'
**** the Rules and Procedures for our April 8th Caucus will be posted here and on our website in their entirety tomorrow afternoon."

That was later amended.

"The 2nd District Republican Caucus uses ballot machines for the express purpose of providing quick, accurate, protected and private balloting. Because of the time required to print the ballots the deadline time was short for those wishing to file to become National Delegates. Understanding such a short notice presented a problem for some we asked and received additional support from our printer.

Please note the following:
'The deadline to have your name printed on the ballot for 2nd District will be 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016 and the deadline to remove your name from the ballot is 3 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016"
